Paving the Way for Creative Teens with the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

The arts are foundational to education because of their unique ability to unlock imaginations. Young artists who pursue their creative talents open several doors for themselves—not just for their academics but for their entire lives.

That’s why the Art Academy of Cincinnati College of Art & Design is proud to partner with the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, paving the way for creative teens to earn highly deserved recognition for their talents through the country’s most prestigious arts competition for young people.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

Since 2015, the Art Academy has been a regional affiliate institution of the annual Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Students in grades seven through 12 throughout the U.S. can submit creative work to be reviewed and judged by a panel of professional artists and art educators. Regional jurors award a selection of submitted works and present them for public exhibition. Qualifying award recipients advance to the national competition where they can earn medals, awards, scholarships, and recognition in industry publications

There are 28 categories of art and writing in which students can submit work.
  • Art categories: architecture and industrial design, ceramics and glass, comic art, design, digital art, drawing and illustration, editorial cartoon, expanded projects, fashion, film and animation, jewelry, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and art portfolio (for graduating seniors)
  • Writing categories: critical essay, dramatic script, flash fiction, journalism, humor, novel writing, personal essay and memoir, poetry, science fiction and fantasy, short story, and writing portfolio (for graduating seniors)
Jurors review each submission of creative work based on originality, skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. Regionally, entries are considered for Gold Key, Silver Key, Honorable Mention, American Voices Nominee, and American Visions Nominee awards. Gold Key-awarded entries are automatically considered for national awards, including Gold Medal, Silver Medal, and scholarship awards.   In particular, the American Voices Award for writing and the American Visions Award art are prestigious honors. As described by the program’s website, the Awards’ core values of originality, skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision are key factors in the selection process.

The 2023-2024 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards at the Art Academy of Cincinnati

As one of the competition’s regional affiliates, the Art Academy receives submissions from students in Southwest Ohio, Northern Kentucky, and Eastern Indiana. Students submit their work in the fall, and regional awards are announced in January. An exhibition of award-winning work is then placed on view at the Art Academy in February, and an opening reception is held to celebrate students and their creative achievements. The general public is welcome (and encouraged!) to visit the Art Academy while works are on view.

Here’s how this past year’s awards looked, by the numbers:

  • Total number of submissions: 3,162
  • Total number of regional awards given: 1,056
      • Gold Key (national qualifier): 228
      • Silver Key: 282
      • Honorable Mention: 536
  • Estimated number of exhibition visitors throughout February: 1,100
  • Total number of visitors at the opening reception: 606

At the national awards, 24 students from the region the Art Academy represents received awards. One student, Austin Zhong from William Mason High School, also received an esteemed American Visions Medal for their work titled “Curious Connections.”
