Create Nichos and Ofrendas for Día de los Muertos
Led by Visiting Artist Meli Bandera (they/them)
Discover the sculptural possibilities of paper pulp and papier-mâché in this interactive workshop. Using recycled materials, participants will create cardboard nichos, a traditional folk art of Latin America, and ofrendas for Día de los Muertos (which takes place Saturday, Nov. 2). Rooted in Nahuatl traditions, this holiday blends indigenous practices with Catholicism, reflecting the impact of colonialism. Nichos and altar-making are part of a broader domestic art form often practiced by Mexican women. Celebrate this rich cultural legacy while crafting personal tributes to honor your loved ones.
Materials will be provided. Please arrive promptly at 11:30 to ensure complete instruction.
NOTE: This workshop is for currently enrolled AAC students only.
