Printwave
An Exhibition by Pull Club Studio
August 25—September 22, 2023
Pearlman Gallery
Opening Reception: Friday, August 25, 2023, 5—8pm
The Art Academy of Cincinnati is pleased to present Printwave, an exhibition showcasing the work of Pull Club Studio.
About the Exhibition: “Printwave is a testament to the ebb and flow of Pull Club Studio’s ideas over the past eight years, exploring materials and the versatile nature of printmaking. Viewers will get an immersive look into the Pull Club archives and a range of artistic exploration, from small works on paper to posters and textile-based creations.
The show will traverse overarching themes of the studio, including works centered on social justice, sustainability, and celebration of the Midwest. Throughout the exhibition, the humor of the artists remains consistent, a crucial fourth member of the collective. In the piece Handsome Cat, the artists riff on their own work, referencing an early piece titled Beautiful Ladies and other works titled Beautiful. The cat, while objectively handsome, has an austere face and a funny look about him. Another piece titled Somos Personas which reads in Spanish “We are people, not stereotypes” explores themes of social justice. This print was created in 2020 as a reaction to fears surrounding immigration through the Mexican border. Somos Personas puts a human-centered focus on immigration, deviating from harmful rhetoric while celebrating Mexican culture and iconography.
Pull Club Studio has focused on sustainability since its inception, and will present reworked archive pieces and waste materials into items that echo the thematic waves of the other works. Printwave will offer an immersive environment in the gallery where viewers may interact with several pieces of art.
Join us at Printwave as we ride the waves of creativity, exploring the multifaceted dimensions of printmaking.”
About Pull Club: “Pull Club Studio is a screen print and design studio specializing in apparel, home goods, and stationery. Established in 2015 in Cincinnati’s Camp Washington neighborhood, Pull Club was co-founded by Linda Winder, Chelsey Hughes, and Amy Scarpello, all graduates of the Art Academy of Cincinnati.
Our designs draw inspiration from the beauty of nature, the Midwest landscape, bad jokes, and the power of friendship. Sustainability is at the core of our philosophy, as we employ water-based inks and eco-friendly printing techniques. We prioritize sourcing materials locally, ensuring a reduced ecological footprint.
At Pull Club, we firmly believe that printmaking should be accessible to all. We actively support educational opportunities and collaborate with non-profits, women, and the LGBTQ+ community. By merging creativity, sustainability, and inclusivity, Pull Club Studio strives to make a positive impact in our community.”
